Banig explores the pre-colonial Philippine craft of weaving dried foliage. Created by interlacing contact prints of banana leaves, Handleigh engages with gestures of making that have been passed down through the artists’ maternal lineage. The fragmentations coming together to form a cohesive whole, Banig explores the experience of mixed-identities and diasporic communities while searching for comfort in the domestic and familial. Using sustainable and organic analog photographic processing, these large-scale prints are made outside of the darkroom without the use of traditional chemistry. Exposed in natural sunlight, the photographic strips are developed in a solution of banana leaves.
